Thrifty Car Rental - Asheville Regional Airport - AVL - North Carolina - USA
Unverified Renter Reviews
This is the most horrific car rental experience I have ever had and one star is way too generous. They plan to charge me 20/day extra for driving from Asheville, NC to PA which would result in an extra 200 for 10 days and this was not reflected in their online quote. When I arrived Miriam was kind enough to let me know this charge. This forced me to cancel my rental and now I have to change my travel plans.
I had been dropped off at the rental location with no way to get home since I am not getting a rental now and they do not offer pick-up/drop-off service, either. This is also absolutely ridiculous.
I was told to get a taxi but asked if they would cover it for my inconvenience if they couldn't give me a ride home. The answer was no.
When I tried to call the manager, her voicemail was full and Miriam told me there was no one else I could contact to complain and no other contact for her manager.
I was scheduled to leave today to help my sister recover from surgery and I won't be able to make it there now.
This delay is completely uncalled for. Had I known it would cost me as much as they just told me when reserving it online I would have reserved from another company that does not have this ridiculous surcharge. I have NEVER heard of this charge before from any rental car company. Thrifty is a scam and a rip-off. I would NEVER use them again and neither should you. Very poor form, Thrifty.
Don't Do It!
Thrifty car rentals are NOT on site at the airport. The shuttle driver was VERY nice. The office did not contact him that we were waiting to be picked up, but we saw the van and flagged him down (about a 20 minute wait). The car reeked of cigarette smoke, but we were in such a hurry to make our destination that we were on the highway before we decided how disgusting the car odor was. When we returned the car the staff member who checked us in said she believed us that it wasn't us who smoked in the car (thanks!) but we should have called or exchanged the car as many other companies would have charged US for smoking in the car. What a "turnaround" -- I guess the best defense really is an offense. This employee was very nice and apologized for the smoke odor. However, considering the condition of the car and the implication that we might have had to pay for the smoke odor, we won't be renting from Thrifty again. Lesson learned--check out your car before you get in it and drive away.
