Shocking upgrade, bad sales practice
Having travelled from the Asia, UK then US, I was somewhat tired.. I was met by a pleasant woman who asked if I wanted the Satnav that was requested in the booking, "stuck on window sir or built into car?" Quite simple... I replied, either but built in would be handy..
After she ran around, spoke to people on the radio, my car was ready.. a Ford Focus was what I was expecting.. bear in mind she had not mentioned one word to me with regard an upgrade!
She indicated to me that I should tap the screen to accept the proposal "all standard sir"... I tried to look at the crap LED screen, the unit was nicely angled up so the light reflected on the screen.. so I was tired, knowing I had an hour plus drive to Lansing, wanted to get going. Clicked and she then showed me to the car... was I surprised when it was a BMW X3!!
I asked how?? she said "don't worry sir, all in the price, I did you a great deal!"
She popped my bag in the trunk, pushed the paperwork in the side of my laptop case and said "enjoy"..
I got to the hotel, got the paperwork out then realised that Id been ripped off for an upgrade! I called and called, no one to take a call after 7pm or so and then got through the next day, in fact to the woman that rented it.. now I couldn't find the paperwork with the details, only a summary sheet of paper!
She asked me if I had the paperwork, I said only one summary piece of paper...After a heated debate she reassured me that the additional costs were for insurance, CDW, full liability and drop off to Chicago..
Hmmm... wasn't till I was packing my bags at the end of the trip I stumbled across the full invoice shoved in another pocket on my suitcase.. low and behold a $50 a day upgrade, clear as day.
CHEEKY SOD! I've hired many cars in the US and each one, not AVIS has clearly said "sir here's what you're about to pay and you get taken through everything.." thinking back, I recall the guy next to her say "hey, don't man, not worth the hassle" - now I know what he was talking about. Crafty saleswoman is probably quite cute at working the upgrade trick.
So motto of this story - I will not use AVIS again - in any country - and have passed this on to the booking agency for my firms global travel. Simple - if that's how they work jet lagged business people, then bad bad bad.. we wont be using them again.
