Bad Hertz Experience
When we arrived at the rental location, we were behind an individual trying to rent the Ford Mustang he had reserved. After 20 minutes of the sales clerk trying to get him to upgrade to a Camaro and purchase everything from additional insurance to the gas fill-up to insuring his first-born child, it was finally our turn. We booked our rental about 6 months ahead of our arrival through Priceline.com (they're not the problem!). We had requested a compact car because it was just the two of us and we had been on the island before, so we knew how hard parking can be with a bigger car. Initially, the lady tried to sell the extra insurance, etc., but I told her we had been there a couple of years ago, and knew there was gas readily available. She clammed up and started treating us very rudely. I don't know if they make a commission on all the extras they sell or not, but sure seems that way. She had us down for returning the vehicle a day after I put down that we would return it. I said , no we'll return it the day before that. She said, "don't worry about it". As I later figured out, she put the later day because the time of day we returning it meant we would be charged the extra day. Very easy to explain so not sure why she couldn't do that. So, finally, she gives us the key and tells us where to go. We go to the spot she tells us, and there is a Dodge Charger there...not the compact we reserved. I went back in and waited for her to finish up with the customer she was with. When they were gathering their paperwork, I went up and said I thought it was a mistake with the car she gave us. She said, "wait, I'm helping these people", which she wasn't...they were already done. Finally, all she said was, "it's not a problem, don't worry about the car". So, I go back outside and think to myself, I'm going to get charged for an upgrade because she didn't say anything about a free upgrade. So, I go back inside again. And, I stand in line because I don't want to be accused of cutting her off with anyone. She see's me standing there and says, "sir, don't worry about it". I said, "I am worried about it. Am I going to be charged for an upgrade I didn't request?" "No", she said, but if you want to wait about a half-hour, we might have a compact for you". Why in the world couldn't she have just explained that they didn't have our car when she was first waiting on us?? After driving around Kauai for 10 days, I can understand why there are no compacts...I never saw so many Dodge Charger rental cars in my life. Hertz must have got one heck of a deal with Dodge. I didn't get her name and she wasn't working the day we returned the car, or I would have got it then. We will probably go back to Kauai on a third trip someday, but you can believe we won't be going through Hertz!!
