Don't risk it when you have other options at Shannon

The car was fine but the the company and staff there are terrible and not worth the risk of the experience I and so many others have had. I was hoping my experience with them was a fluke and a mistake on their part but after months of disputing and reading other reviews it is evident that their intentions are to nickel and dime you. I was hoping not to have to write this review, but at this time I feel like I should share my experience to warn others, especially those who do not often rent cars. I do not recommend using Europcar as I have been in a dispute for an exorbitant, unauthorized charge which they refuse to refund, causing extreme amounts of time and energy to get it resolved.

I was charged $700 when the rental had been pre-paid and I was only picking it up. The people working behind the desk were not helpful in resolving the issue in-person and directed us to call the company, resulting in more time and energy. Because the company was not helpful either we had to open a dispute which has finally elicited a response from Europcar in Shannon (although not a resolution).

My parents rented the car through Expedia, paying the full amount of the rental to Expedia (who is being helpful). They missed their flight to Shannon Airport and were rerouted to Dublin leaving me to pick up the car in Shannon.

After handing the woman at the Eurpocar desk our pre-paid rental car confirmation from Expeida, she asked me if I wanted insurance to which I replied “No, our CC covers rental insurance.” She then told me that most CC do not cover rental insurance in Ireland or New Zealand (news to me but potentially true). I responded that that was interesting and asked her how much the car rental insurance cost. She noted a price (around $35 per day and a deductible). She then watched and listened to my sister and I gawk and do the math. The car was rented for 14 days. We discussed out loud with her about the cost of the insurance and for the 2nd time we declined the insurance and I also noted aloud to her that I believed one of our CC would insure us if necessary. She said she thought we should have insurance and we said NO – for the 3rd time!

The lady and I verbally noted and AGREED that we were declining insurance and she asked for my credit card. Since it was pre-paid I ask her why she needed my card. She said that because we had declined insurance they had to have the card as a hold in case anything happened (which makes sense to me). I gave her my card

Arriving home there was a $700 charge on my card. My parents were still in Ireland with the car so I told them to make sure Europcar refunded me when they returned the car (I assumed I had misunderstood the lady, and they had to have some deductible like a rental house typically holds. Again, that made sense to me.)

When they returned the car they spoke with a gentleman. The woman I worked with was also present but my parents said she looked down the whole time and would not look them in the eye throughout the entire interaction or even speak to help clear up and resolve the situation. The gentleman informed my parents that the charge was for insurance and that we couldn’t rent a vehicle without getting insurance (whether true or not, this is NOT what the lady told us.) He also said that if we had insurance through our cc they needed something in writing noting that we were using the insurance with our credit card (I have no idea if this is true but the women NEVER said anything about it). They then directed us to cooperate without refunding the amount.

In addition Europecar is now claiming in writing that part of the charges were for adding another driver for $200 and another fee (which was incurred after the $700 charge was made) both of which we have SEPARATE and PAID receipts.

Do not trust her or even both speaking and working with her if you have to rent a car from Europcar. She said one thing and charged another then when we came in to try to work it out and figure out what was going on she wouldn't even participate in the conversation. She was the only one who had first hand knowledge of the experience and could have helped clarify the situation which she chose not to do.
