Herz Paphos Airport Disaster

I pre paid for a Focus sized car, but was offered a Nissan Micra automatic. I paid €85 for a full tank of petrol.

The car was high milage, battered on the outside, every panel having damage, and it was very tired on the inside. Starting and leaving the remote compound that Herz uses at Paphos, the car made a terrible sound from the engine bay, and as we were leaving to join the motorway, there was a sound like a loud motorbike following close behind us. I turned around and took the car back.

They said that there was no other car available and then tried to fix the slipping alternator belt with WD40. It didn't work. They also said that the rear wheel bearings needed fixing. I said that I would not accept the car as it was potentially dangerous and I did not want to be left stranded on holiday. I was told to take it to my hotel and they would phone me in the morning.

The following morning I waited for a phone call. By early afternoon I had heard nothing so I drove the car back to them. They apologised for not phoning and said that there was still no car available. They did say that I could have a Peugeot 107 that they had there, which again was high mileage and had damage to the bodywork. I made sure that this was marked on the paperwork and took the car as I was wasting valuable holiday time.

I enjoyed my holiday and decided to keep the 107 and complain and get a refund for the wrong car and excessive petrol charge when I returned the car.

Upon returning it, the staff member started to make noises that I had damaged the car. I pointed to the paperwork detailing the damage. When I started asking about a refund for being given the wrong class of car and the higher petrol charge, we were told to complain to head office and were bundled into the minibus to take us to the airport.

I complained by email and on twitter to Hertz the day after we returned. A month later I had heard nothing so re sent my complaint last week and was assured that it would be looked at. I have still not had a response from Herz.

I have used Hertz before but this episode has made me lose faith in the company. If I do not get a refund and apology I will never use them again.
